The major fields covered by the libraries contained therein were:

Lower-level parts of the CERN Program Library were most prominently used by the data analysis software `F33f`_`[Physics Analysis Workstation`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Physics_Analysis_Workstation]`_`f (PAW) and the detector simulation framework `F33f`_`[GEANT`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=GEANT-3]`_`f, both of which are also part of the CERN Program Library.
CERN Program Library used the year as its version, with not explicitly denoted minor revisions within a year. Besides legacy software dependency, for newer applications written in `F33f`_`[C++`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=C++]`_`f, CERNLIB is superseded by `F33f`_`[ROOT`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=ROOT]`_`f.

Development and support for CERNLIB was discontinued in 2003.`:cite-ref-cern2014-1-1[`F5bf`_`[1`#cite-note-cern2014-1]`_`f] Libraries were still available "as is" "for ever" from the CERNLIB web site but with no new code, no user support and no port to `F33f`_`[IA-64`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=IA-64]`_`f.
The code was revitalized in 2022,`:cite-ref-cernlib-status-2-0[`F5bf`_`[2`#cite-note-cernlib-status-2]`_`f] multiple patches were added and as of 2023 the code can be compiled on multiple architectures either with its native build system `F33f`_`[imake`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Imake]`_`f or with the `F33f`_`[CMake`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=CMake]`_`f. The revitalized version is based on the CERNLIB release 2006.
